Guest Post: 5 Reasons People Will Unfollow You on Twitter
Because of the ease in following people on Twitter once you join you usually get flooded with notifications that new people are following you on a daily basis. Some of these people will be your friends and colleagues, some of these people will be businesses trying to connect with you, some of these people have a genuine interest in what you have to say, and some of these people are just spammers. However, if you aren’t careful you can start losing followers just as quickly as you gained them, especially if you’re doing any of the following five things:
1. You’re spamming people
No one wants to read tweets that promise to give them an iPad if they click on the link embedded in the text or any other unrealistic promises. People want to read tweets that add value to their lives, not ones that waste their time and provide nothing more than a virus to their computer.
2. You tweet excessively
There is nothing more annoying that logging into Twitter and seeing that the same person has tweeted 50 different things in a row. No one has that much that is relevant to say, and it’s a huge turn-off to see the same name pop up again and again… and again… Calm down and give others time to say something too.
3. All of your tweets are negative
Everyone has at least one person on their Twitter feed that is a Debbie Downer 24-7. And that person usually gets unfollowed rather quickly. Yes, we all know that it’s easy to tweet your complaints, but it’s also pretty likely that no one really cares what you have to say when all you have is negativity to share.
4. All you do is self-promote
A little shameless self-promoting is to be expected, and if you have a new blog post or a relevant pitch then you would be doing yourself a disservice by not sharing it to your followers. However you have to give your tweets some life and personality as well; people want to feel like they’re connecting with someone, not getting marketed to all the time.
5. Your Twitter looks unprofessional
Take the time to upload a picture and update your Twitter profile because keeping the little egg picture screams fake account and spammer and gives no one any reason to want to follow you. If you want people to be your Twitter friend you have to give them a valid reason to follow you. Being a Twitter egg is not a valid reason.
While there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to Twitter that is going to work for everyone, there are some common rules that should be followed. Be the type of tweeter that you want to follow and you should attract like-minded people.
