This Week’s Insights 📰
US Newspapers Sue Microsoft and OpenAI
The media showdown intensifies as newspapers like the New York Daily News and Chicago Tribune sue Microsoft and OpenAI. They claim the tech giants copied their articles verbatim to train AI tools like Copilot and ChatGPT. The lawsuit points out the AI’s knack for creating damaging falsehoods, such as a fictitious Denver Post article promoting smoking as an asthma cure. The stakes are high as these publications fight to protect their content and reputation from AI’s unpredictable “hallucinations.”
FKA twigs Creates Her Own Deepfake
British singer, songwriter, and dancer FKA twigs takes a bold step into the AI arena, submitting a testimony that explores the dual-edged sword of artificial intelligence in the creative industry. She’s not just talking the talk; she’s been developing her own deepfake to manage her digital persona. Her goal? To harness AI’s power while championing strict regulations to protect artists’ identities and intellectual property. Her AI deepfake has been development for over a year and is “not only trained in [her] personality but also can use [her] exact tone of voice to speak many languages.” As the debate heats up, FKA twigs is pushing for legislation that keeps creativity safe from AI’s impersonal touch.
AI Hunts Bitcoin Bandits
Crypto forensic firm Elliptic is stepping up the game by deploying cutting-edge AI to sniff out bitcoin money laundering. By leveraging deep learning, they’re identifying not just dubious transactions but entire networks, unmasking the complex web of digital deceit. It’s like giving a bloodhound a brain upgrade for the blockchain era, and they’re training their AI to chase down the crypto crooks across a whopping 200 million transactions. Watch out, launderers, Elliptic’s tech is on your tail!
ChatGPT’s New “Memory” Feature
ChatGPT’ nifty Memory feature has been rolling out this past week, making your chats stickier than a post-it! This update lets the AI remember certain details you tell it across conversations. Fancy that? Just chat away and say “Please remember…” to add personal nuggets like your favorite pizza topping or your dog’s name. Want to forget? Just head over into the settings and under Personalization you can toggle Memory on or off. It’s all about making your AI chats smoother, more personalized, and creepily good at remembering your birthday!
Human v. Algorithm, The Ultimate Battle
The latest online culture clash pits humans against algorithms, sparking a debate on the personalization of digital experiences versus privacy. As tech giants like Spotify and TikTok push for hyper-curated content through sophisticated algorithms, a counter-movement is emerging, advocating for algorithm-free platforms. Spearheaded by entrepreneurs like Tyler Bainbridge, these new spaces aim to reintroduce human curation, hoping to preserve genuine interactions in an increasingly automated world. Bainbridge’s new baby, PI.FYI is a new social platform social platform with the goal to “bring back human curation.”
As the tug-of-war between human curation and AI-driven recommendations intensifies, other new platforms like Spread are championing a return to the human touch in content curation. This movement is fueled by concerns over the invasive nature of algorithms that not only predict but also shape user preferences, often at the cost of privacy and autonomy. Ryan Stoldt from Drake University highlights a key insight into human behavior: “If you look at sociology, we’ve seen a lot of research that shows that people naturally seek out things that don’t cause cognitive dissonance.” This is exactly why we’re seeing this push for platforms that respect user agency—creating spaces where choices are influenced by genuine, authentic human interaction rather than opaque algorithmic processes.
AI Lab Visual Vault 🖼️
Use Case: Using the –weird parameter in Midjourney to explore the creative possibilities.
In Midjourney there are a plethora of parameters to help you create unique images. The –weird parameter is a fun one. It accepts values from 0-3000. It’s a very experimental feature and it can change over time.
To use this parameter, you just add it after your prompt. Example: a woman holding a potted plant –weird 500
Check out the images HERE!
Prompt: a woman holding a potted plant
We did not use a weird parameter here to show you a control image.
a woman holding a potted plant –weird 500
a woman holding a potted plant –weird 1500
a woman holding a potted plant –weird 3000
