There may not be anything more affected by social media than the way we hear about, react, and respond to emergencies and disasters. If you think back on some of the most recent catastrophic events, Twitter was often first on the scene. People used it to give quick updates, talk to family, and help warn others about danger.

Social media was used to great success after the earthquake in Japan. Twitter kept the rest of the world informed along with videos from YouTube and Facebook was headquarters for relief efforts and fundraising.
